This year, the Centre for Environmental Rights (CER) is embarking on a new journey with our Rights & Remedies environmental course for activists.

Rather than running the full course again, we are focusing on consolidating our progress, monitoring our impact, and evaluating our methods. This year of consolidation will allow us to enhance the effectiveness of our training programme and ensure that it continues to meet the needs of environmental activists.

Key Milestones and Strategic Focus for 2024

Objective: Our primary goal is to assess the effectiveness and impact of the Rights & Remedies course. Through a combination of internal reviews, external webinars, and community engagements, we aim to gather insights that will drive continuous improvement.

Feedback Collection: We will gather feedback from past participants, facilitators, and our civil society and community partners to gain a comprehensive understanding of the course’s influence on their activism and the broader environmental justice movement.

Curriculum Improvement: Insights from graduates and activist leaders will guide updates to our course content and teaching methods, ensuring they remain relevant and impactful.

Network Building: We will initiate the process of forming the Rights & Remedies Alumni Network to foster ongoing support and collaboration among activists.

Action Plan:

Impact Assessment: We will invite previous course participants to submit reports on their work since attending the course. These reports, along with interviews, will help us understand the course’s impact on their activism.

Community Engagement: We will conduct site visits to areas affected by environmental degradation and pollution, allowing us to observe the practical application of learnings by our graduates and gather valuable feedback for future course enhancements.

Alumni Gathering: We are planning a three-day event to reflect on past achievements, assess legal remedies, and lay the groundwork for the Rights & Remedies Alumni Network.

Microsite Launch: We are developing a dedicated microsite to showcase the accomplishments of Rights & Remedies graduates, disseminate training materials, and outline the future direction of the course.

Meeting Strategic Objectives

Since its inception, the Rights & Remedies course has trained over 100 community activists, empowering them with the skills and knowledge to advocate for environmental justice effectively.

This course is crucial one of CER’s strategic outcomes, ensuring that a diverse environmental and climate justice movement is growing and supported. By equipping activists with practical skills and fostering a collaborative network, we are not only expanding the movement but also ensuring that it is robust and sustainable. Our participants are at the forefront of this growth, driving change and advocating for environmental justice in their communities.

We look forward to sharing more updates with you throughout the year and appreciate your continued support as we strive to make meaningful impacts in the fight for environmental justice.

Please look out for further emails and engagements from us. We encourage you to share your impact stories with us and follow us on social media to stay connected and informed.
