Minister Creecy publishes South Africa’s 8th National Greenhouse Gas Inventory Report
9 May 2023
On 9 May 2023, the Minister of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment published South Africa’s 8th National Greenhouse Gas Inventory Report.
The Department’s media statement on the Inventory Report is available here.
The National Greenhouse Gas Inventory Report covers the period 2000-2020 and provides estimates of the current emissions levels and trends in South Africa and will form part of the Fifth Biennial Update Report to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). South Africa is required by the UNFCCC to provide in its national inventory, on gas-by-gas basis, and its units’ mass, estimates of anthropogenic emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4) and nitrous oxide (N2O), by sources and removals by sinks. An accurate, complete, and updated greenhouse gas emissions inventory is a good foundation for effective mitigation responses.
