Draft National Inland Fisheries Policy Framework for South Africa

On 22 June 2018, the Minister of Agriculture, Foresty and Fisheries published the draft National Inland Fisheries Policy Framework for South Africa for public comment.

The stated purpose of the draft policy framework is to guide the sustainable utilisation and development of inland fisheries in South Africa. It is also “designed” to align inland fishery givernane with Constitutional requirements for a sustainable development approach to natural resource utilisation for the benefit of all citizens.

Section 24 of the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa, 1996

Everyone has the right to an environment that is not harmful to their health or well-being; and to have the environment protected, for the benefit of present and future generations, through reasonable legislative and other measures that prevent pollution and ecological degradation; promote conservation; and secure ecologically sustainable development and use of natural resources while promoting justifiable economic and social development.
