Nabeelah Mia

Attorney

Nabeelah Mia joined CER as an Attorney in the Mining Programme in January 2020. She holds an Honours in Psychology and an LLB from the University of Cape Town. Following her graduation, she completed her articles of clerkship at Webber Wentzel in Cape Town and remained there as an associate until 2016. In 2016, she was awarded the UCLA Law-Sonke Health & Human Rights Fellowship through which she read for an LLM in Public Interest Law and Policy and International and Comparative Law at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). Thereafter she worked as Sonke Gender Justice’s Policy Development and Advocacy Fellow. Nabeelah then went on to complete her clerkship at the Constitutional Court of South Africa as a law clerk for Justice Nonkosi Mhlantla. Just prior to joining CER, she completed a stint as a researcher at the South African Institute for Advanced Constitutional, Public, Human Rights and International Law, a centre of the University of Johannesburg.

Nabeelah strongly believes in the aspirational quality of law and the use thereof to effect social change. She is excited to be a part of contributing towards the promotion of fundamental rights and developing narratives of environmental justice and rights being intrinsic to social justice and human rights.
