Johan, who grew up in a small town in the Free State, obtained a Bachelor of Social Science at Rhodes University in 2012. He also holds an LLB degree from the University of the Witwatersrand, where he is currently studying for Masters in Human Rights. He is a Canon Collins Scholar and has a deep passion for human rights, emancipatory politics and environmental justice. During his studies he worked as an intern for the Centre for Applied Legal Studies, the Socio-Economic Rights Institute, the South African Human Rights Commission, Amnesty International and the Southern Africa Litigation Centre. In 2014 he was a Student Editor for the South African Journal on Human Rights and has served as both a committee member for Legal Activism at Rhodes, and a sub-committee member for Students for Law and Social Justice at Wits. As an ardent humanitarian, Johan hopes to become a seasoned human rights and environmental lawyer who helps to ensure that human rights are enjoyed by all, and environmental justice is fully realised.
