On 20 July 2023, the CER on behalf of the Sukumani Environmental Justice Organisation submitted a PAIA Request to the DMRE for records in respect of Ikwezi Mining (Pty) Ltd’s Ikwezi coal mine located in Danhauser in KwaZulu-Natal.

The documents requested were:

1. Complete written applications made by Ikwezi to the Principal Inspector of Mines to conduct mine blasting within 500m of community and other public structures under Regulation 4.16(2)(b) of the Mine Health and Safety Act Regulations (GN R93 in GG 17725 of 15 January 1997). The applications should include the following:
   i. a sketch plan indicating the distance from the blasting area to the affected structures;
   ii. the risk assessment;
   iii. a proof of consultation with the owners of the affected structures; and
   iv. restrictions and conditions;
2. Approvals granted to Ikwezi by the Principal Inspector of Mines to conduct mine blasting under Regulation 4.16(2) Mine Health and Safety Act Regulations, including any restrictions and conditions imposed under Regulation 4.16(2)(d).
3. A copy of Ikwezi’s health and safety policy as required by section 8 of the Mine Health and Safety Act 29 of 1996.
