The Department of Environmental Affairs has just published Draft National Dust Control Regulations under s.32 of the National Environmental Management: Air Quality Act, 2004 for public comment. Amongst other things, these Draft Regulations propose creating a new prohibition on specified levels of dust pollution, and a new criminal offence for non-compliance with this prohibition. It also proposes new tools for air quality officers to order increased monitoring of dust emissions.
Download a copy of the Draft Regulations here or from www.saaqis.org.za. Comments on the Draft Regulations are due 60 days after 27 May 2011, and must be sent to Olebogeng Matshedisho at [email protected].
Remember that comments supportive of the draft regulations are also relevant and important in the Minister’s decision on the contents of final regulations.
