Today, our partner organisation groundWork launches The Bliss of Ignorance – an award-winning new documentary that explores South Africa’s complex relationship with one of the country’s most abundant resources: coal. The documentary, which features residents of the Mpumalanga Highveld and a range of legal and scientific experts, looks at the impact of South Africa’s energy policy – particularly the support for Eskom, the state’s energy utility’s reliance on coal-fired power stations – on public health.
For the past week, communities across the Highveld have been attending screenings of the film in isiZulu, organised by the Highveld Environmental Justice Network.
