The Centre for Environmental Rights is calling for applications for the position of Senior Attorney to lead our work on advancing environmental rights in the mining and other water-intensive industries. Key responsibilities include:
- providing legal advice and representation to communities and civil society organisations affected by detrimental environmental impacts of mining and poor water management, including through public interest litigation;
- leading the Centre’s advocacy around improved and transparent regulation and management of environmental impacts and water governance, including providing expert input into draft policies and legislation;
- supporting and facilitating the Mining and Environmental Justice Community Network;
- providing mentoring for and oversight of junior attorneys, candidate attorneys and interns.
To be considered for this post, applicants must:
- be an admitted attorney with five years’ post-qualification experience, including experience in High Court litigation, particularly Constitutional and administrative law (experience in environmental litigation is an added advantage)
- be committed to addressing inequality and injustice and to protecting and furthering environmental rights
- have superb interpersonal skills, be collaborative in nature, and an excellent networker
- have excellent writing, research and legal drafting skills
- have a strong commitment to high quality client service
- have experience in project management and project leadership
- be willing to travel throughout South Africa
- understands the constraints of working for a non-profit organisation, and can be resourceful within these constraints

The Centre for Environmental Rights is calling for proposals from fundraisers to assist the CER and the Environmental Defence Fund with fundraising. This is a fixed-cost flexible-term contract position, with terms to be negotiated.
The ideal candidate:
- has at least a bachelor’s degree in an appropriate discipline
- has a minimum of five years’ experience working for a grant-making organisation or as a fundraiser in the environmental and/or public interest law sector
- is experienced in programme development and proposal-writing, including budgeting
- has a thorough understanding of the local and international donor funding environment
- has excellent communication skills, including excellent English writing skills
- understands the constraints of working for a non-profit organisation, and can be resourceful within these constraints.
