Li-Fen Chien is the Centre’s Office Manager and an admitted attorney. She was born in Taiwan and moved to South Africa in 1990. She studied law at the University of Free State and graduated summa cum laude in 2008. She articled at Deneys Reitz Inc. (now Norton Rose Fullbright) in Sandton from 2009 to 2010, and was thereafter appointed as an attorney in the Corporate, Mergers and Acquisition team. Apart from corporate and commercial law, Li-Fen worked on several environmental law matters and was fortunate to be part of the very first team of attorneys to undertake legal work in the renewable energy space, especially in respect of environmental, property and other regulatory requirements for the REIPP procurement programme. Her interest in environmental law motivated her move to Cape Town in 2012, where she took up a position as attorney in the environmental practice at Cliffe Dekker Hofmeyr. She joined the Centre in 2014 and hopes to contribute meaningfully to the realisation of environmental rights in South Africa. She speaks several languages, including English, Afrikaans, Mandarin and Taiwanese. She is a perpetual learner because she believes that learning provides the opportunity to make a difference, and is currently completing a diploma in therapeutic reflexology. She is also a recovering chocoholic.
